Apple iPhone's Built-in Maps Now Supports Bike Navigation Across All 50 U.S. States
Apple Maps, built into Apple's iPhone, now offers bicycle navigation across all 50 U.S. states, allowing users to receive turn-by-turn directions while bicycling.
According to Apple Maps enthusiast Justin O'Beirne, as of July, Apple Maps cycling routes have full coverage in 49 U.S. states, and since then cycling routes have been made available in Hawaii, covering the entire U.S.
Apple Maps provides cycling routes along bike paths, bike lanes and bike-friendly roads whenever possible, including details such as elevation, how busy the streets are and whether there are stairs along the way. On Apple Watch, voice guidance and haptic feedback make it easier for users to focus on the road ahead.
Apple Maps ride directions are also available in select other countries, including China, London, England, Barcelona, Spain, Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, Canada.
Apple is playing catch-up with Google Maps, which began offering cycling routes in 2010 and now offers the feature in more than 30 countries. Google Maps, however, is just beginning to roll out detailed information about bike routes, such as elevation, how busy the streets are and whether there are stairs on the route.
