BMW has developed a new generation of pure electric mini convertibles: with 181 hp electric motors and a WLTP range of 233km
A BMW source told Autocar that they will soon build an all-electric sister model of the next-generation Mini hatchback EV on a custom platform as part of a joint venture with Chinese automaker Great Wall Motor.
In as early as 18 months, BMW will introduce a new electric Mini three-door model, making it the ideal basis for a convertible model. This three-door architecture is also said to have a 40 mm longer wheelbase than the current car, which should improve the ride and significantly increase rear space.
It also means that the next generation of Mini convertibles will all have larger batteries than this one-off prototype, and the EV platform could allow the current Mini to have significantly less front overhang while passing future crash tests.
Autocar says future electric convertibles will have larger batteries, with the equivalent Cooper model getting a 40kWh battery. Any Cooper S convertible could be equipped with a 50kWh battery and deliver a real-world range of around 250 miles (about 402.34 kilometers) and very strong performance.
Official BMW sources would not give more details about this fourth-generation Mini derivative, but Autocar says the new all-electric model will ditch much of the classic Mini design, including the flip-top hood that has been in place since 2001.
Although the three-door Mini EV and Mini ICE hatchback are based on completely different architectures, they will both share a streamlined interior developed under Heilmer's leadership. The Mini's circular speed dial will remain in the form of a touchscreen, and other switches will be significantly reduced, including the BMW-style circular controls, sources said.
