Samsung announces first 16Gb GDDR6 memory with 24Gbps processing speed to begin shipping as next-generation GPU platform arrives

By    14 Jul,2022

Samsung noted that Samsung GDDR6 graphics are designed to meet JEDEC (Joint Electronic Device Engineering Council) specifications and are compatible with all GPU designs. Samsung's new GDDR6 series will also feature low-power options to help extend the battery life of laptops, and will be available in 20Gbps and 16Gbps versions. It comes with Dynamic Voltage Switching (DVS) technology that adjusts the operating voltage according to performance requirements. At an operating voltage of 1.1V, energy efficiency is improved by approximately 20% compared to the 1.35V GDDR6 industry standard.

The demand for graphics memory is increasing in PCs, laptops, gaming consoles, and even more heavy graphics scenarios such as high performance computing (HPC), autonomous driving, and electric vehicles. For these emerging areas, Samsung GDDR6 can enable 4K or 8K video playback while providing resource-hungry AI gas pedals with load support.

IT Home has learned that Samsung expects to achieve double-digit annual growth in the next few years as a percentage of the overall memory market for high-performance graphics. With customer validation taking place during the month and the release of the new GPU platform, Samsung plans to simultaneously promote the commercialization of 24Gbps GDDR6 memory.
