BMW (BMW) has created an all-electric version of its current convertible (Mini Convertible) to test the market for a potential next-generation model.

According to the company, "This one-off Mini Electric Convertible is a prototype, designed to test drive a zero-emissions convertible with the Mini."

The discount prototype is described as being based on Mini Electric's powertrain components, using the superstructure of the current Cooper S convertible, built in Munich.

The prototype is equipped with a 181-horsepower electric motor and has a maximum range of 145 miles (about 233.35 kilometers) in WLTP conditions, essentially the same as the production Mini Electric.

Although the convertible is 140 kg heavier than the Cooper S convertible with internal combustion engine, the boot capacity remains the same at 160 liters.

BMW says the current Mini convertible will not be converted to an electric car, but rather a new convertible model: "We have already announced that the Mini convertible will receive a successor, but it is too early to talk about the engine combination that will replace the current Mini convertible.
