Meta smart glasses will be secretly shot? Zuckerberg: It's possible

In an interview on "The Joe Rogan Experience," Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg was asked whether Meta's smart glasses could pose potential privacy concerns, and while defending the company's product, he admitted that the glasses could be used for secret filming.

The smart glasses, created by Facebook in collaboration with Ray-Ban, will be available in September 2021 at a starting price of $299. The glasses are equipped with a small voice-activated camera and microphone on both sides of the frame, allowing users to take photos or videos.

During the exchange, the moderator questioned Zuckerberg about whether such a "miniature camera" would pose privacy issues, asking "what if people could just start filming?" Zuckerberg countered that the product has a flash on one side that flashes when recording video or photos, and emphasized that "that's a very important part of it.

However, the moderator continued, "What about if you put tape on the flash?" Zuckerberg acknowledged the possibility, "I guess, in theory, yes."

While the flash will flash when filming, Zuckerberg also said that the tape could indeed interfere with the camera on the glasses. He also stressed that the company is "continuing to work on a new version" of the glasses.

Meta could not immediately be reached for comment on the exchange.

Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, is no stranger to privacy issues. The company recently faced a boycott in the United States for handing over private Facebook information to police investigating alleged illegal abortions.
