AI painting has given rise to a new profession: now you can make money by selling DALL-E 2 prompts, and the platform takes a 20% cut
A recent startup, PromptBase, allows users to buy and sell prompts on the platform for $1.99. PromptBase takes a 20% cut from sellers.
A number of prompts are already available on the platform, generating content ranging from news headlines, sports team logos and knitted dolls to formal photos of animals.
In the case of the Knitted Doll, the AI is guaranteed to generate a cute and consistent knitted doll, but the exact style is randomized each time. It's like a blind AI box.
At the moment, PromptBase only hosts prompts tested on DALL-E 2 and GPT-3, but founder Ben Stokes has said externally that the platform will expand to other systems in the future, with the ultimate aim of serving a new profession - Prompt Engineers. What is Prompt Engineering?
What is Prompt Engineering?
Prompt Engineering is a concept born out of pre-trained models and low-sample learning that allows AI to perform completely new tasks at a fraction of the cost.
In other words, the task is described in words and fed to the AI, which then understands it and can perform it directly without the need for further training.
A typical example is the creation of an image in the style of a particular painter, e.g. enter the prompt "fox sitting in a field at sunrise, Monet style" and you will get.
There is no fixed style of description for the prompt, you can choose.
You want to get an image of a koala with a bicycle. You can write "A child's drawing of a koala on a bike" or "An old photo of a koala on a bike".
Such freedom has made applications such as GPT-3's Generate Text and DALL-E's Generate Image popular.
