Microsoft admits CPUs too advanced can make Win11 data corrupt, then releases patch that causes performance drop

Microsoft has published a serious bug in Windows 11 and Windows Server 2022 on its website, indicating that users of its latest desktop operating systems may experience data corruption issues.

Microsoft said the affected systems were powered by processors that support the latest Vector Advanced Encryption Standard (VAES) instruction set, specifically Intel's 10th generation Core (Ice Lake) and above and 3rd generation Xeon Scalable (IceLake-SP) processors, as well as AMD Zen 4 architecture processors.

Microsoft has issued a patch, which was addressed in the 24 May 2022 Preview and 14 June 2022 security patches for Windows 11. However, the patch is less than perfect and AES-based operations such as BitLocker, TLS, and disk throughput on the system may be half as fast as before after these updates are applied.

Users will then need to update further to the 23 June 2022 preview or the 12 July 2022 security patch to fully resolve the performance issue.
