Matter, the universal standard for smart homes, is coming to fruition, and Amazon is opening up multiple toolkits

By    25 Jul,2022

The toolkit includes a new native API interface that includes modes for home, vacation, dinner, sleep and more, which can also be kept in sync across different smart home platforms.

Now, users may need to wake up Alexa and say commands such as "I want to lock the door," "turn down the thermostat," "turn off the lights," "increase security," and so on. "But Koopmans said that in the future, the experience will be more "proactive" and users won't need to say "I'm leaving.

However, the implementation of such scenarios still requires developers to design, she said. Amazon is also expanding the program to allow device makers to develop features for users, which would be one of the key steps in making the smart home less complicated and more automated.

Third, leveraging Matter to allow intelligent assistants to pre-respond to user needs

These are all part of Amazon's attempt to improve the smart home experience. Through Matter to connect more smart home devices, so that users of these devices know what the user is doing, and can respond in a timely manner.

Alexa has already launched a version with a "predictive mechanism", for example, the user used to turn off the porch light after 9 pm, when the voice assistant anticipates this behavior, will help the user turn off at 9 pm, without the user then issued a command.

The ability of smart home devices to respond correctly and anticipate user thoughts is a complex task. For years, Google subsidiary Nest, the maker of smart thermostats, has been trying to get its devices to respond to "home" and "away" modes without a command from the user, but so far it hasn't worked. And Apple still does not seem to have begun to explore in this area.

However, the landing of the Matter standard will drive this vision to fruition, as the more devices connected to a user's home, the easier it will be to create a connected environment.

Amazon did not mention updates related to the integration of the smart voice assistant Alexa itself with the Matter standard, Koopmans reiterated in a press interview that the existing smart speaker Echo will allow OTA (Over-the-Air download technology) updates to work with Matter over Wi-Fi, and that the router Eero Wi-Fi and the fourth generation of smart speakers Both the Echo can act as an edge router for Thread, so users can connect Thread devices to their home networks.

However, Koopmans also shared some information about how Alexa and its apps will be compatible with other platforms once the Matter standard is in place.

The Matter standard will add some local control capabilities to Alexa, allowing the voice assistant to respond faster to user commands, such as turning off lights. "If a user has a Thread edge router in their home, their smart home will work, whether the Internet is on or off," Koopmans said.

In addition, Alexa also works well with other Matter-compliant smart home platforms, such as Google Home and Apple's HomeKit, where users can seamlessly add new Matter-compliant devices or Matter-compliant controllers in the background without having to generate and enter Matter-compliant setup code for each device.
