TikTok is the most used app in the world, and Instagram was the most downloaded app in Q2 2022, according to a report that shows mobile app usage is growing in the U.S. and several other countries even though the peak of the epidemic is long past.

The study, conducted by app intelligence firm data.ai, shows that users in 13 regional markets spend more than four hours a day using apps.

In addition to the United States, iPhone and Android users in Indonesia, Singapore, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, India, Japan, South Korea, Canada, Russia, Turkey and the United Kingdom spend more than four hours a day using apps.

In three of these markets, Indonesia, Singapore and Brazil, mobile users spend more than 5 hours a day on social media and other apps on their phones.

That said, the report suggests that "the epidemic may have had a more lasting impact on app usage. Despite a so-called 'return to normal' in 2022, mobile consumers who adopted new apps during the pandemic appear to have persisted in this behavior."

Other markets that saw a slowdown in growth included Indonesia (+10%), India (+5%), Japan (+5%), Canada (+20%), Russia (+10%), the US (+5%), the UK (+5%), China (+5%) and Germany (+10%). Some markets saw no growth or a slight slowdown, such as Mexico (0%), Turkey and Argentina (both -5%) - but comparisons with the peak epidemic timeframe suggest that trends are simply normalizing to previous levels.

The study also shows the top apps and games in Q2 2022. Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and WhatsApp are the most downloaded apps. tikTok, YouTube, Tinder and Disney+ are the most consumed apps. Finally, Facebook remains at the top of the list for monthly active users, followed by WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger.
