Apple iPhone 14 Pro phone A16 performance forecast: 15% faster CPU, 25-30% faster GPU, 50% more memory bandwidth

By    26 Jul,2022

"We think it's reasonable to expect a 25 to 30 percent improvement in GPU performance, which is roughly in line with the last few A-series processors. You'll see this in current benchmark runs and tests that are limited by memory bandwidth."

The iPhone 14 Pro is expected to require enhanced processor performance: an upgrade with a 48-megapixel camera sensor and support for 8K video capture. This comes after Kuo said that the primary camera is 48 megapixels. As a result, Macworld expects most of the additional performance to be focused on image processing and artificial intelligence.

"It's not simply a matter of loading a 48MP sensor. It has to have a wider, faster data path to the image signal processor. That image processor must be able to process four times as many pixels (or take four times as long to process the image - unlikely given Apple's priority for camera responsiveness) ......

In other words, this new camera may require a more powerful image signal processor and a neural engine (dedicated hardware for AI and machine learning tasks). We're sure Apple would love to improve the movie mode introduced with the iPhone 13 Pro. For example, it's currently limited to 1080p shooting, but moving up to 4K shooting requires more image processing power. The same goes for more natural AI bokeh or multi-object tracking. Apple is serious about beefing up its image processor and neural engine for good reason."

Here's another area that would benefit from greater memory bandwidth.

"The shift from LPDDR4x to LPDDR5 will increase memory bandwidth by up to 50 percent and have a positive impact on energy efficiency. This in itself does not make any one task faster, it simply provides more breathing room for high bandwidth operations such as 3D graphics and image/video processing."
