The Volvo Cars Asia Pacific headquarters in Shanghai, which will open in 2019, has a total site area of approximately 200,000 square metres and includes a number of functions related to the entire value chain of Volvo Cars Asia Pacific, including design, research and development, industrial and commercial operations. The park's main buildings include the Asia Pacific headquarters building, the Asia Pacific design center and the R&D center.

Officials say that Volvo Cars is committed to becoming a zero-load climate benchmark by 2040, and that green initiatives at its own operations will play a key role.

Volvo Cars' Asia Pacific headquarters is the only LEED Platinum-rated office building in Shanghai that has received multiple "green" certifications. LEED is known as the "Oscar" of the green building industry and focuses on the actual operational performance of buildings in terms of water, energy and air, indoor environmental quality, and green innovation, of which achieving Platinum certification is the most difficult.

"The Asia Pacific Headquarters Campus Smart Carbon Footprint provides a real-time overview of the campus' carbon emissions data, including total energy consumption and carbon emissions, clean energy use and solar photovoltaic power generation, commuting and travel carbon emissions of employees and visitors, etc.

In addition to the focus on transparency of sustainability data, continuous reduction of energy use and energy efficiency are also top priorities in the daily operations of Volvo Cars Asia Pacific. For example, office workstations are arranged within 10 meters of windows, providing employees with plenty of natural light. The building automation system provides centralized control and optimal regulation of lighting in the open office areas. The meeting rooms are equipped with body-sensing detectors, and the lighting will be automatically turned off if the meeting rooms are not used for a long time. The lighting uses LED lamps with high color rendering index, which further reduces energy consumption while ensuring the lighting effect. Volvo Cars Asia Pacific is continuously upgrading the intelligent building control system to keep the equipment running optimally, saving more than 1.7 million kWh of electricity per year.
