Boston Dynamics, which has changed ownership three times in seven years, is pleased to present another AI institute today

By    18 Aug,2022

The advantage of BDAII is that it is able to work with both university research labs and corporate development labs, each taking advantage of the strengths of the other, which is more conducive to advancing robotics.

II. BDAII researches four major areas and further expands recruitment

BDAII's mission is to address important challenges in artificial intelligence and robotics and to accelerate the development of intelligent robots. bdaii will make robots smarter, more agile, more dexterous, more adaptable and more human-like. They want to increase the productivity of robots and intelligent systems, replace people in jobs that are dangerous, make life easier for people with disabilities and, in turn, make life better for people.

BDAII is a research-based organisation, and the Institute is dedicated to solving the difficult technologies needed to build advanced robots. The Institute's four core technical areas of work are: cognitive AI, athletic AI, organic hardware design, and robotics ethics and policy.

The BDAII will therefore devote resources to research and development in these four areas. In addition, the institute will establish collaborations with university research laboratories and business development laboratories to test theory through practice and guide it through theory.

The next step for the BDAII is to expand its research, so they are also expanding their recruitment on a large scale and looking for more robotics experts. Mark Leibert writes on the BDAII website that

Our team culture is one of technical fearlessness, teamwork, mutual respect and technical fun. We will hire the best talent we can find and provide them with the best resources in terms of equipment, computers, etc. If you have skills in robotics, machine learning, computing, hardware engineering, etc., we are eager to have you join us and work with us to advance the field of artificial intelligence and robotics.

Conclusion: Can BDAII help commercialise Boston Dynamics?

Boston Dynamics was founded in 1992 and was first acquired by Google in 2013. Four years later, Google sold Boston Dynamics to SoftBank Group. Under SoftBank, Boston Dynamics' quadruped robot Spot was launched and the associated Spot Explorer kit generated over $30 million in revenue for SoftBank. 2020 saw the sale of Boston Dynamics to Hyundai Motor Company.

According to IEEE Specturm, Boston Dynamics seems to have been trying two different paths. One is a commercial path based around robots like Spot and Stretch, and the other is a separate research path focused entirely on Atlas.

The article suggests that advanced robotics will have huge commercial value in the future. As things stand now, Boston Dynamics has set up BDAII to develop more advanced robotics technology in preparation for commercialisation later on.
